What does the device do that an app on my phone doesn’t?
- It’s faster and easier. Apps are great. But even the best apps take multiple steps to log any event. New parents are often logging 15-20 events per day 24/7. The Talli device gives you the option to just hit a button on your way into or out of the nursery at 3 am. Or press a button with your knuckle after changing a dirty diaper. No need to find your phone or navigate through multiple steps. It’s one step and one second. This reduction in time and friction at each event really adds up over the course of a day or week.
- It’s intuitive for babysitters, nannies & grandparents. Apps come with a learning curve and can be a little more challenging for grandparents and nannies who help out with baby for shorter periods of time. The Talli device is simple and intuitive. Just a button press.
Does my phone have to be nearby the device?
No! The Talli device uses Wi-Fi to send event data to your app account in the cloud. It never sends data to your phone. You can use your phone to login to the app and see all your data, no matter how it was logged or who logged it. Your app will always show you all your data in real time.
- If you’re out at the store and your partner is home with the baby, you can login from the store and see everything they’ve logged while you’re away.
- If you’re at work and grandma or a nanny is with the baby, you can login from work and see everything baby’s been up to in your absence.
- If you’re pumping at work while someone else is looking after baby at home, just log that pumping from the app at work. All the data goes to the same place, and everyone you invite to your app account can see all data in real-time from their phones.
I’m having multiples. How can Talli help me?
- Each device can log events for one child. So, each child will need his or her own device. They come with a tag for labeling each one.
- We offer a 2-pack of devices at a discount so each device costs less when bought as a pair. (Also helpful if you want one device upstairs and one downstairs or want to keep one at home and one at Grandma’s.)
- You can add as many children as you want to the same app account. Just swipe back and forth on the child header area in the app to move between children.
- The device time savings for multiples is even greater. You’ll be logging many more events each day, and saving a few seconds and a few steps at each one will really add up.
Is the device portable?
- Yes. Many parents choose to mount the device on a wall so it’s always in a predictable and accessible location. But it also comes with rubber feet you can attach to the bottom of the device if you want to keep it on the changing table, on a bedside table, etc. Either way, it’s easy to move around as needed. (Even it it’s on the wall, you can just slide up and out to remove it anytime.)
- If you move your device to a location where it will need to use a different Wi-Fi network to send events, you can easily pair it with a different Wi-Fi network. See how to do this further down this FAQ page.
- While the device IS portable, please keep in mind that the device always sends the events it logs to the Talli Baby app. There is NO data stored on the device. You can log all the same events from the app as well, so the app is often the most convenient choice when you’re out and about or on the move.
- We also offer an Alexa integration so you can log hands-free by voice commands when you’re in earshot of an Alexa device.
Can you ship outside the US?
- Sadly, no. Not yet. But we’re working on it!
Can I add Talli to my baby registry?

When you’re viewing a Talli single device or double-pack on our website, you’ll see an “Add to Babylist” button beside the Purchase button. If you have a baby registry on babylist.com, this button will add Talli to your registry!

What are the dimensions of the device?

Device dimensions are 5" x 3.25" x 1.25."

It’s easy to mount on a wall, like just inside the nursery door (comes with screws/anchors and a wall hanging template.) It’s also easy to set on a table and move around as needed. It comes with adhesive rubber feet you can attach to the bottom to provide a little extra grip on flat surfaces like tables, counters, or dressers.
What do the buttons mean/do?
What’s the micro USB for on the side of the device?
- The Talli device is not rechargeable. The device runs on 4 AA batteries (included). The batteries should last about 4-6 months with regular use.
- The device is intended to run on battery power. There is no power cable included.
How does the device work?

When you press an event button, that button will light up, and the device will wait a couple of seconds to see if you have any other event buttons to press. If not, the sync button (small button at bottom right) will flash green. This means the device is connecting to your Wi-Fi and sending the event(s) to the app.

The app shows all your data all the time, and you can edit or delete any events you want. There are NO data stored on the device.
The device will not register any button presses while it’s transmitting (while the sync button at bottom right is flashing green.)
I’m having trouble removing the battery door. Can you help?
The Talli device ships with three AA batteries inside the device and one in the packaging. A few tips on easily unscrewing and reinserting the battery door screw to insert the fourth battery at setup or to change the batteries down the road:

You’ll need a standard small or medium sized Philips head screwdriver. You should not need an eyeglass screwdriver or anything that small, but if you try to use a large or extra large Philips head screwdriver, you may find it’s a little too big to fit into the slots. Please see the video below for an example of standard small-to-medium drivers versus a large driver.

Hold the screwdriver perpendicular to the device and insert into the slots.

Press down a little and turn to the left (counter clockwise) to remove the screw.

It can take 10-12 turns to the left to unscrew. And 10-12 turns to the right to screw back in.
How do I set up my Talli device?
When you get a new Talli device, it will come with instructions in the box for setup. There’s also a link to the instructions from the “Add device” or “Device details” screen in the app. Basically, you just need to:

Tell your device what Wi-Fi network you want it to connect to for sending events (and give it the password)

Pair the device with a child in your app account so it knows where to send the events it logs

I’m having trouble getting my device into pairing mode. Can you help?
- Before the Talli device will broadcast to your phone’s Wi-Fi networks list for setup, it has to be in pairing mode. You’ll know it’s in pairing mode because the Wi-Fi/sync button at bottom right will be lit in solid orange.
- To enter pairing mode, the Wi-Fi/sync button must be held down for 8 full seconds or until all the event buttons (bottle, solid food, wet diaper, dirty diaper, sleep, nursing, pumping, and miscellaneous) flash white two times.
- If you’re holding down the Wi-Fi/sync button for 8 seconds and NOT seeing the rest of the buttons flash white and then the sync button lit orange, you may just need to hold down the sync button a little longer. Try holding down the sync button for 10-12 seconds or until all the buttons flash white. (Sometimes counting to 8 seconds mentally goes a little faster than 8 full seconds as counted by the device.)
I’m having trouble getting the setup screen to load on my phone. Can you help?

The most common reason the setup screen might not load is if the sync button on your Talli device is NOT lit up orange. (It does have a timeout.) If that button isn't lit up orange, the device is not in pairing mode, so won't be broadcasting that "Talli" network and opening the setup screen for you to enter your Wi-Fi info.
Please make sure the Sync button is lit orange when you go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Available Networks and tap on "Talli." -
It's also possible the device IS in pairing mode (sync button lit orange), but your phone isn't opening the setup screen automatically.
If this is the case, you should be able to open the camera on your phone and hold it over the QR code below. That will pop up a little message on your phone where you can tap to open the QR code link, which should open the setup screen on your phone. This code is also at the bottom of the page under Step 7 in the setup guide that came with the device. If this doesn’t work, try opening a browser on your phone and typing 192.168.4.1 in the address/url bar.
Remember: The QR code above (or going to 192.168.4.1 in your phone’s browser) will only show the setup screen when the Talli device is in pairing mode with the sync button lit solid orange. To get into pairing mode, hold the sync button down for 8-12 seconds, or until all the event buttons flash white twice and the sync button becomes lit solid orange.
What comes with the device?
Your Talli device will have a few extra items in the box.

4 AA batteries.
**To preserve battery life, we recommend that you put the batteries in until you’re going to start using the device. If you want to go ahead and set up the device (pair it with your Wi-Fi and app account) before your baby is due, no problem! Just get it all set up and then remove one of the batteries until you’re ready to start using the device. -
A tag. If you want to label your device with your child’s name (especially helpful for twins!), we’ve included a small tag on an elastic band. Just slip the elastic around the device. It will sit in the groove around the sides of the device.

2 anchor + screw sets and a mounting template. If you want to mount your device on a wall (just inside the nursery door, for example), we’ve included a set of 2 drywall anchors and screws, along with a paper template to show you where to put the screws. The anchors we’ve included are self-drilling, so there’s no need to pre-drill a hole. All you need is a Phillips head screwdriver.

A strip of four rubber feet. If you want to set your device on a table, dresser, counter, etc., we’ve included 4 adhesive rubber feet. Just stick these on the bottom of the device at the four corners. These feet will provide a little extra grip on a flat surface to reduce sliding.
Device error codes
Your Talli device has built-in error codes to let you know if something goes wrong with setup and help you troubleshoot. If there’s an issue for you to address, you’ll see a set of 4 buttons light up on your device. Look up the 4-button error code below to see how to fix it.
Top 4 buttons: Wi-Fi connection issue
If you’ve just received your device, this is the default code you’ll see when you put the fourth battery in.
When you press an event button, the device is trying to connect to Wi-Fi and send off that event, but it doesn’t yet have your Wi-Fi network name and password to use. So it can’t connect. Once you follow the setup instructions and pair it with your Wi-Fi and app code, you should be good to go!
If you’ve been using your device successfully and then start seeing this code, it means the device is no longer able to connect to your router with the credentials saved to it.

Did you get a new router or Wi-Fi provider? Did your Wi-Fi password change? Please start over (copy app code, hold down sync button for 8-10 seconds until all the event buttons flash white and the sync button lights solid orange, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Talli) and double check your selected Wi-Fi network name and password. There’s a checkbox to show the password just below the password field on the Talli setup page.

No change to your router or Wi-Fi credentials? Sometimes, dual band routers can lose the 2.4GHz band that Talli uses to communicate. This is usually fixed by cycling the power on your router. (Power off the router, wait 10-20 seconds, then power it back on.) If this does not help, please email us at support@talli.me. We’ll help get it figured out!
Bottom 4 buttons: App code issue
If the bottom four buttons light up, there was a problem with the app code you entered to tell the device which app account it should send events to. The most common issue with the app code is forgetting to enter it in Step 3: App code on the Talli setup screen.
The graphic below points out some of the spots where trip-ups can happen for pasting in your app code after you’ve copied it from the “Add device” screen in the Talli Baby app.
Left 4 buttons: Communication failure
If the left four buttons light up, your Wi-Fi credentials (network name and password) are correct, but the selected Wi-Fi network wasn’t able to connect to the internet. Are you able to get online from that Wi-Fi network on other devices? (Phone, laptop, etc.?)
Bottom left corner buttons: Device paired with another app account
If the two left-most buttons and the second from the left on the bottom row are lit up, your device is already paired with another app account. If someone gave or sold you their Talli device, they’ll need to remove this device from their Talli Baby app account before you can add it to yours.
To remove the device from their app account, they’ll go to More > Talli Devices and select the device. Then they can tap “Remove this device.”

How do I change the Wi-Fi network my device uses to transmit events?
Traveling and need to connect to a new Wi-Fi network? Got a new router at home? Not a problem. Here's a quick video on how to change the Wi-Fi your device is using.

Hold down the sync button (small button at bottom right) of your Talli device for 8-10 seconds until all the event buttons flash white twice and the sync button lights orange. The device is now in pairing mode.

On your phone (NOT in the Talli Baby app, just on your phone) go to Settings then choose "Wi-Fi." You'll see "Talli" in the list of available networks. Tap on "Talli."

This will open the Talli setup page. Tap the Wi-Fi network you want the device to start using to submit events to the app. Then enter the password for that network. You can use the checkbox below the password field to show the password so you can double check it.
LEAVE THE "APP KEY" FIELD BLANK. If you're just updating the Wi-Fi network the device is using to send events, you do NOT need to put anything in the App Key field. Your device is already paired to your app account.

Tap "Save." The new Wi-Fi network name and password are saved to your device!
Can I save multiple Wi-Fi networks on the device so it uses whichever one is in range?

Not yet, but this is coming soon. We’re working on the ability for you to save more than one Wi-Fi network onto the device. So, if it’s at home, it uses your home network. If it’s at Grandma’s or the babysitter’s house, it uses that network. Etc. For now, you’ll need to use the steps above to manually change the Wi-Fi credentials any time you change networks.
My device has started logging “ghost” events. How can I fix this?
From time to time, one of the buttons on your Talli device can get turned a bit out of position and get stuck in the down or pressed position. When that happens, every time the device wakes up (every 29-30 minutes to check for updates or anytime another button is pressed), it sees that button as pressed and logs that event. (Or starts / stops the timer if it’s a timer button.)
If this is happening with your device, take a look at the button icon for the event you’re seeing those 30-minute “ghost” events from. Does it look slightly turned one way or another? (Image below showing straight up-and-down alignment of all the button icons.) If it does, you should be able to press down and turn it back into place until it pops back up out of the down position. And, voila, no more “ghost” events!
Talli App FAQs
Can I use the app without a Talli device?
- Yes! The Talli Baby app is available for Apple and Android phones in the Apple AppStore and the Android / Google Play AppStore.
I’m creating my app account, and I’m not seeing the confirmation code to finish setup.
- The code you need to finish creating your new app account will come from “New Talli Accounts” (accounts@talli.me) and the subject line will be “Your Talli Confirmation Code.”
- Sometimes, it gets filtered to your “Promotions” tab.
- Other times, it might get sent to Junk Mail.
- If you don’t see it in either of these places, it’s possible you mis-typed your email at sign up. Please double check that and try again.
- You can also re-try by tapping “Send a new code” on the Confirm Sign Up screen.
- If you have your verification code and the app has returned to the Sign In screen, tap “Confirm a Code” above the Login button to enter your code and finish your account setup.
I’ve logged an event or started a timer with the device, but I’m not seeing it in my app right away. How can I make sure it worked?
- The app refreshes to check for updates regularly. But if you’re watching it after logging and event from the device, you can pull down on whatever app screen you’re on to force it to refresh and update.
- To pull to refresh, just hold your finger down on the top half of the screen and pull down past the halfway point on your screen. This will refresh the data on whatever screen you’re on.
I’m having trouble with inviting another user / caregiver.
- To invite a user / caregiver (partner, spouse, grandma, etc.) to share your account, go to More > Account Sharing and tap “Add caregiver.”
- You’ll need to make sure the email address you use for the invite is the same email address that person uses or used for setting up their account in the app.
- The Account Owner (the person who set up the account) needs to be the one to invite other users to share the account. The Account Owner is technically the one who has the permission to “share” the child(ren) associated with that account with an invited caregiver/user. If someone other than the Account Owner invites a user to share the account, the invited user may not see the child(ren) associated with that account.

Downloading the skill & pairing with your Talli Baby app
To download the Talli Baby Alexa skill, open the camera on your phone and hold it over the QR code below. Or just search the Alexa Skills store for “Talli Baby.”
After you download the Talli Baby Alexa skill, you’ll need to pair it with your Talli Baby app account. Here’s how:
What’s my username for connecting Alexa with the Talli Baby app?
Your username for the Talli Baby app is the email address you use to sign in. If you’re already signed into the app and want to check your username/email, just go to More (bottom right) > Account Sharing. This will open the “Users” screen, where your name and email/username will be displayed at the top as the Account Owner.
How you can talk to Alexa
For any event type, Alexa should be able to understand who you want to log for if you say any of the following:
1. The child’s name: “Sarah is having applesauce.”
2. The child’s gender: “She had a dirty diaper.”
Alexa should also be able to understand what you want to log whether you tell her in present tense or past tense.
1. Present tense: “Noah has a dirty diaper.”
2. Past tense: “Noah had a dirty diaper.”
One important note, though, is that we have NOT yet built in the ability for you to tell Alexa a specific time in the past when an event occurred. Like, “Charlie slept from 1pm to 2:15pm.” This is coming!
What you can say for each event type
Bottle
For bottles, Alexa can recognize who you want to log a bottle for and what was in that bottle. Note: We haven’t quite finished the ability for Alexa to log an amount for bottles. This is coming soon!
Here are some examples for bottles:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Log a bottle event for Noah.
- Noah is having (or had) a bottle.*Note: If you’ve set a default contents and/or amount for new bottles for this child in the app, all you have to do is tell Alexa to log a bottle, and she’ll log one with the default contents and amount!
- He is drinking (or drank) a bottle of formula.
- I am giving (or gave) Noah a bottle.
- I am feeding (or fed) him a bottle of breastmilk.
Solid Food
Alexa should know to log a solid food event based on the words “solid food” OR a specific type of food you’re feeding.
Like these examples:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Log a solid food event for Sarah.
- I am giving (or gave) her applesauce.
- I fed her bananas.
- Sarah is having (or had) rice cereal.
- She is eating (or ate) carrots.
Diapers
Alexa can log wet diapers, dirty diapers, or mixed diapers.
Here are some examples:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Log a dirty diaper for Noah.
- Noah has (or had) a wet diaper.
- I’m changing (or changed) a mixed diaper for Noah.
- He peed (or pooped) in his diaper.
Sleep
You can ask Alexa to start or stop the sleep timer for your child.
Some examples of starting the sleep timer:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Start the sleep timer for Sarah.
- I just put Sarah down for a nap.
- I just put Sarah down to sleep.
- She is (or went) down for a nap.
- She is asleep / went to sleep.
- Sarah just started sleeping.
Some examples of stopping the sleep timer:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Stop the sleep timer for Sarah.
- I just got Sarah up from her nap.
- Sarah is up from her nap.
- Sarah is awake.
- She woke up.
- Sarah is done with her nap.
- She stopped sleeping.
- Sarah is finished sleeping.
Nursing/Breastfeeding
You can ask Alexa to start or stop the nursing (or breastfeeding) timer for your child. Note: We don’t have nursing by side working just yet via Alexa. But it’s coming!
Some examples of starting the nursing (or breastfeeding) timer:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Start the nursing timer for Sarah.
- Log a nursing event for Sarah.
- I just started nursing Sarah.
- I just started nursing for Sarah.
- Sarah started nursing.
- I am nursing Sarah.
- She just started (or is) nursing.
Some examples of stopping the nursing (or breastfeeding) timer:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Stop the nursing timer for Sarah.
- I stopped nursing Sarah.
- I just stopped nursing for Sarah.
- Sarah stopped nursing.
- She finished nursing.
Pumping
You can ask Alexa to start or stop the pumping timer. Note: If you have multiple children in the app, you’ll need to specify a child you’re pumping for. If you have twins, you might want to always say pumping is for the same child, so all the pumping data gets added up altogether in the app. We’re working on a “multiples configuration” in the app that will let you combine pumping totals across children if you have multiples. But this isn’t quite ready yet. Also note: We don’t have pumping by side working just yet via Alexa. But it’s coming!
Some examples of starting the pumping timer:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Start the pumping timer for Noah.
- Log a pumping event for Noah.
- I just started pumping.
- I am pumping for Noah.
Some examples of stopping the pumping timer:

Miscellaneous
In the Talli Baby app, you can label the “Miscellaneous” button to be anything you want. So, maybe you change the label for this button to be “Health.”
You can also add dropdown options for the Miscellaneous button in the app. For example, you might add “Children’s Tylenol,” “Children’s Motrin,” “humidifier,” and “bath.”
Alexa should know to log a Miscellaneous event if you say whatever label is currently in the app for this button. She should also recognize one of the dropdown options you entered for this button if you say it.
Like these examples:
“Alexa, tell Talli Baby…”
- Log a Health event for Sarah.
- Log a Miscellaneous event for Sarah with Children’s Motrin.
- I gave Sarah a bath.
- I gave her Children’s Acetaminophen.
